I'd like to make a donation. Who should I make my check out to?

Answer: If you want your donation to be used for the care of the animals (spay/neuter, veterinary care, special food, medicines, obedience classes, etc.), please make you check payable to " VOLUNTEERS FOR ANIMALS," P.O. BOX 1621, BATAVIA, NEW YORK 14020. Check out HELP THE ANIMALS PAGE for other ways you can help out.

How to I adopt an animal from the shelter?

Answer: It's EASY! Just go to the shelter and pick out your new best friend. Then fill out the "Adoption Application." Upon approval, if you adopt a dog you must obtain a license (it's the law). Return to the shelter with the license, pay the appropriate fee(s) and you and your new friend are on your way home! Cats do not require license, so after completing the paperwork and fees, you can leave with Kitty.

FYI: Anyone who adopts an animal from the shelter can receive a cash rebate when they have their new friend spayed or neutered!

How much does it cost to adopt an animal from the shelter?

Answer: The Genesee County Animal Shelter charges a $30 adoption fee for both cats and dogs (half goes to the county and half to VFA). If the animal is not yet spayed/neutered, a $35 deposit is required which is refundable upon proof of spay/neuter. New York requires the $35 deposit for any animal not spayed/neutered.

Where is the Shelter located?

Answer: The Shelter is located at 3841 West Main Street Road, Batavia. From downtown Batavia, head west on Main Street - Route 5 (Top's Plaza will be on your right hand side). The Shelter is approxmately 1-1/2 miles west of Top's on your right side (just past the Sunoco station). You'll see a sign for Genesee County Building #2. Turn right into the parking lot and the shelter will be on your right. Traveling from the west: Head east on Route 5. The Shelter is approximately 12 miles from the intersection of Routes 5 & 77.

Can I still surrender my dog or cat at the Genesee County Animal Shelter if I reside in a neighboring county (i.e. Livingston, Monroe, etc.?)

Answer: Only residents of Genesee County may surrender an animal at the Genesee County animal Shelter. Please phone ahead before bringing an animal to the shelter. Although we want to help as many animals as we possibly can, there are times when space is not available.

Does the Shelter euthanize animals after a certain time once they are put up for adoption?

Answer: NO! Once animals have been okayed for adoption, we keep them until we find a good home for them. We do euthanize animals if they have a serious medical problem which affects their quality of life. And we euthanize if there is a serious behavioral problem which makes it impossible for the animal to be adopted.

What types of shots do the shelter animals receive?

Answer: DOGS receive 1-year rabies shots and are wormed. If Volunteers For Animals spays or neuteres the animal, they are tested for heartworm prior to surgery. PUPPIES receive 1-year rabies shots if they are old enough, parvo, and are wormed. CATS receive 1-year rabies, distemper, are wormed, and are tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (Feline AIDS). KITTENS receive 1-year rabies if they are old enough, distemper, are wormed, and are tested for leukemia if they are not at the shelter with their mother. Advantage is given to all animals depending on whether fleas are found on the animal.
